Sit In Your Power: The Gift That Waits On the Other Side of Meeting Yourself

Recently I wrapped my 5-week workshop, Foundations of Soulful Mediumship, at Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas. Five weeks of guiding people back to their own soul-self. Here’s the thing nobody tells you about mediumship. It was never just about talking to loved ones who have passed. It’s about knowing your own soul so well that you can recognize the depths of another one, with a body or without one. You can’t meet a spirit halfway if you haven’t met yourself first.

That’s the whole workshop. That’s the whole point.

In mediumship, we call this practice “sitting in your power.” It simply means sitting in silence, on purpose, and letting yourself become aware of who you are underneath the noise. Not who you perform as for your job, your family, or social media. The soul underneath all of that. The more familiar you become with your own energy, your own patterns, your own inner voice, the more capable you become of recognizing what isn’t yours, whether that’s spirit communication or simply someone else’s opinion of who you should be.

One evening, while I was guiding the group through meditation, a rabbit hopped into the sanctuary and sat just outside our circle. Nobody but me could see him. Everyone else was somewhere else entirely, deep inside themselves. Just the two of us, looking at each other.

In Celtic tradition, the rabbit is considered a messenger between worlds. But what stayed with me wasn’t the mysticism. It was this: rabbits are wired for fear. Every twitch, every sound, every shadow puts their whole nervous system on alert. And yet they keep moving toward where they’re going anyway. Fear doesn’t cancel the trip. It just comes along for the ride.

That’s true for most of us too. I still feel fear regularly. I’ve just stopped letting it drive. It’s allowed in the car. It can say whatever it wants from the backseat. It doesn’t get to hold the wheel. That one internal shift changes how you show up to everything else in your life.

I watched this shift happen in real time at Seaside. As people went inward, they came out with more than a sense of peace. They came out with clarity and direction. One woman finally pitched the work she’d been talking herself out of for months. Another stopped circling the same decision she’d been avoiding for weeks and simply moved. Small shifts on the inside. Real changes on the outside.

Here’s what tends to happen once you actually meet yourself this way. You start to notice your own talents more clearly, the gifts that have been sitting quietly underneath the self-doubt. And with that noticing comes inspiration, a nudge toward actually using them. That inspiration doesn’t stay abstract for long, if you let it. It turns into action steps. Writing down the idea instead of thinking about it for the hundredth time. Sending the email you’ve been drafting in your head for months. Booking the thing, pitching the thing, starting the thing.

If you’ve been stuck in procrastination or avoidance around something you know you’re meant for, it’s rarely about time management. More often, it comes down to self-worth, or a quiet lack of belief that you’re capable or deserving of what you want. That block softens the moment you start getting honest with yourself about who you actually are, not who fear has convinced you to settle for.

To support this kind of inward work, I created a short meditation you can use anytime you want to practice sitting in your power. You can find it here.

This is exactly the work we do together in my monthly gatherings. It isn’t therapy, and it isn’t about reliving the past for its own sake. It’s a space to get quiet, see what’s actually possible for you, and come back out ready to move on what you’ve been avoiding.
